Week 1 Recap: Big Performances, Hot Shooting and an Opening Night Thriller

Week 1 Recap: Big Performances, Hot Shooting and an Opening Night Thriller

Fall 2026 tipped off with TNR, Heat Check and Jersey Icons claiming opening-night victories, while several players made early statements in the race for league honors.

The wait is over! The Citrus Men’s Basketball League officially tipped off its Fall 2026 season on Thursday, October 15, at Hoop Heaven in Whippany, New Jersey, and opening night delivered plenty of excitement.

Six teams took the floor looking to establish themselves as early contenders. From TNR's commanding victory over Court Kings to Heat Check surviving a three-point shootout against Primetime, Week 1 offered a glimpse of the competition ahead.

With the first games in the books, TNR, Heat Check and Jersey Icons sit atop the standings at 1–0, while Court Kings, Primetime and Clutch City will look to bounce back in Week 2.

TNR Makes a Statement with 71–52 Victory Over Court Kings

Final Score: TNR 71 | Court Kings 52

TNR wasted no time making its presence felt, opening the season with a convincing 19-point victory over Court Kings.

Michael Abdul-Qawi led TNR with 17 points, while Jaja Layo provided a spark from beyond the arc, knocking down four three-pointers on his way to 14 points. Ben Selkow added 12 points to round out a balanced offensive attack.

But TNR's success wasn't just about scoring.

Jason Foster and Duane Deane each grabbed 10 rebounds, helping TNR establish a strong presence on the glass.

Court Kings had a pair of standout performances of their own. ACE led all scorers with 20 points, while Tony Johnson delivered an impressive all-around effort with 17 points, 12 rebounds and four assists.

Despite those individual performances, Court Kings couldn't overcome TNR's depth and scoring balance.

The takeaway: TNR showed it has multiple offensive weapons and the ability to control the boards. If that combination continues, this team could be a serious contender.

Heat Check Survives Primetime in an 80–77 Opening Night Thriller

Final Score: Heat Check 80 | Primetime 77

If Week 1 taught us anything, it's that Heat Check and Primetime know how to put points on the board.

In the highest-scoring and closest matchup of opening night, Heat Check escaped with an 80–77 victory despite an impressive shooting performance from Primetime.

Bryan Campbell led Heat Check with 27 points, delivering the offensive firepower needed to secure the win.

Oshamiar Majette was equally important, recording a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Clarence Josiah added 14 points and four assists, giving Heat Check three players in double figures.

But Primetime wasn't going away quietly.

KB matched Campbell with 27 points while adding nine rebounds and five assists in an outstanding all-around performance.

Everett White caught fire from deep, connecting on six three-pointers and finishing with 23 points. SPEECH added four more triples, giving Primetime a dangerous perimeter attack.

Despite Primetime's outside shooting, Heat Check did just enough to secure the three-point victory.

The takeaway: Heat Check proved it can win a high-scoring battle, but Primetime showed enough offensive firepower to make some serious noise this season. Don't be surprised if these teams give us another classic when they meet again.

Howard's Six Three-Pointers Lift Jersey Icons Past Clutch City, 58–47

Final Score: Jersey Icons 58 | Clutch City 47

Jersey Icons opened their season with a strong team performance, using timely shooting and balanced scoring to defeat Clutch City by 11 points.

Jermel Howard was the story of the game, knocking down six three-pointers and finishing with a team-high 20 points.

Matt Taylor provided a strong interior presence with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while LaComb Antoine added 12 points.

Courtney Fleurantin contributed 11 points, including four made field goals in the second half, helping Jersey Icons maintain their advantage.

Clutch City received 14 points apiece from Tony Boyd and Yoav Malka, with Malka connecting on four three-pointers. Brian Kufferman added 10 points, while Reggie Hudson contributed three points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Although Clutch City had several contributors, Jersey Icons' scoring balance and Howard's outside shooting proved too much to overcome.

The takeaway: Jersey Icons showed that they can hurt opponents from the perimeter while getting production inside. Clutch City will look to regroup after its opening-night loss.
